Speaking

PRACTICE 4: For this unit you will need to retell a story or make up one of your own. This will require you to use the French past tenses with some assurity. The trick isn't to get overwhelmed by all the grammar, but rather to listen and read enough stories that it because natural when you do it yourself.

Here is an example of a simplifed version of a story. Try writing some of your own and in time and with practice, you will be talking in the past too. Notice the key phrases. Notice how stories follow similar patterns.

Les Trois Petits Cochons

Trois Petits Cochons

Questions:

  1. Which tense does the story begin with?
  2. What tense does it switch to after "un jour"?
  3. When describing conditions, like the house didn't move, or that he was hungry, what tense was used?
  4. To describe actions or events, like he knocked, he blew, he said, what tense what used?

Communication

PRACTICE 6: A good language larner can use various strategies to keep a conversation going. Here are some examples of how to do that in French.

Showing interest in what the other person says
To show interest in what the other person is saying, you don’t have to say much. You can use the words like ‘Vraiment?’ (with a rising intonation),‘D'accord’ or ‘C'est exacte?’ and ‘C'est vrai’ or ‘Tu as raison’ to show that you are really listening.

  • ‘Est-ce que tu savais? Jake adore parler français.’ ‘Vraiment?’
  • ‘Tu sais, je déteste terriblement la téléréalité. C'est nul.’ ‘Tu as raison.’
’ ‘D'accord.’

Expressing your feelings
There are many short phrases which you can use to express your feelings. Examples are: ‘Oh non’, ‘Quel horreur’ , ‘Tu plaisantes’, ‘C'est ridicule’, ‘Quel dommage’ etc.

‘Quel dommage.’

You can also try asking short questions like ‘Sans blague?’, ‘Es-tu?’, ‘As-tu?’ etc

  • ‘On a mangé la cuisine indienne hier soir.’ ‘Sans blague? Comment ça a été?’

Writing

PRACTICE 8: You will need to be able to write questions to obtain and clarify information. This may require a review of how to form questions, but most importantly, it will require that you think about what makes a good question. You have already had some practice with this in the communication section, but here are some additional examples.

What if questions

If you visited Utah, what would you do?

If I went to France, what would be different?

Pourquoi est-ce que tu as voulu apprendre l'anglais? Why did you want to learn English?

Comment est-ce que tu imagines l'Utah? How do you imagine Utah?

Checking for understanding

Tu voulais dire que...? You wanted to say that...?

Alors, selon toi... So, according to you...

Es-tu d'accord? Do you agree?

Comment sais-tu que...? How do you know that...?
