Speaking

PRACTICE 4:

For this unit you will give a detailed weather report in French. Using the images below, give a weather report.

weather report

Temperatures are in Fahrenheit.

Be certain to use a variety of weather expressions and phrases in your descriptions.

Although you can focus on current weather, you will also predict and forecast future temperature based on local conditions.

Every weather forecast should have the basics such as air temperature, type of weather (cloudy, rainy, sunny, etc), wind speed and direction as well as humidity. Then, depending on how much information you wish to include, you could put in visibility, amount of cloud cover, amount of precipitation, and arriving storms.

Listen to the example:

Explanation:

In French 1 we learned the basics. Quel temps fait-il?

Il fait beau - The weather's nice

Il fait chaud - It's hot

Il fait froid - It's cold

Il fait frais - It's cool

Il fait mal or mauvais- The weather's bad

Il fait du vent - It's windy

Il fait du brouillard - It's foggy

Il fait humide - It's humid

Il fait nuageux - It's cloudy

Il fait du soleil - It's sunny

The other way to talk about the weather is with a specific verb, such as to rain or to snow. Here are some examples:

Il pleut - It's raining

Il neige - It's snowing

Il gèle - It's freezing

Il y a des orages - There is a thunder storm

Here are some more fun weather expressions:

Il pleut des cordes - It's raining cats and dogs (literally: It's raining ropes)

Il fait un temps à ne pas mettre un chien dehors - The weather's too bad to go outside (literally: The weather is such that I wouldn't even put a dog outside)

Il fait un froid de canard - It's cold enough to freeze a penguin (literally: It's cold like a duck)

Il pleut des grenouilles - It's raining enough to drown a fish (literally: It's raining frogs)

Temperature:

Il fait chaud. Il fait 36°. It is hot. It is 36°.

Il fait doux. Il fait 17°. It is mild. It is 17°.

Il fait froid. Il fait -4°. It is cold. Il is -4°.

Remember that 32° C is boiling and 0° C is freezing.

Des Jours à l'Avenir - Une Prévision Météo

PRACTICE 5: Making an estimation of weather is what you will really be doing in French. This requires the near future and a simple change in the phrase to do. This is the verb aller - to go.

Il va faire beau - The weather's going to be nice

Il va faire chaud - It's going to be hot

Il va faire froid - It's going to be cold

Il va pleuvoir - It's going to rain

Il va neiger - It's going to snow

Il va y avoir des orages - There is going to be thunder storms.

Here is another practice.

John's Future

PRACTICE 9:

Now listen to the following explanation about John and what he wants to do for work now and in the future. Then answer the questions that follow.
