Assignment 1: In Les vacances et les voyages, you learned how to talk about vacations, including discussing foreign travel and air and rail travel. In addition, you read about how many French people spend their vacation time.

Youth hostels are very popular with college students who are traveling. Compared to hotels, they are inexpensive, and many have common rooms in which you can meet other travelers from around the world. Look at the following youth hostel search websites. Keep these questions in mind:

  • Who do the youth hostels cater to?
  • What sorts of facilities do they have? How many people can stay in a room? Are there common rooms?
  • On average, how much does a night's stay cost? Are any meals included?
  • Where do the hostels tend to be located? Are they in similar places?
  • If you were traveling, would you like to stay in a youth hostel? Why or why not?

Auberges de Jeunesse Suisses http://www.youthhostel.ch/fr/accueil
Search for a youth hostel in Switzerland.

Hostelling International-Canada http://www.hihostels.ca / en / index.aspx?sortcode=2.3
Find a youth hostel in Canada.

La Fédération des Auberges de Jeunesse http://www.fuaj.org/
Find a youth hostel anywhere in France.

Application

Imagine that you and a friend are taking a trip to one of the above countries. You are in charge of finding a place to stay. Search for a youth hostel in a city you'd like to visit. Write an e-mail to your friend telling her or him which one you picked, in which city it's located, how long you'll stay there, what amenities it has, how much it costs, etc. Then, you and a classmate could use the information to write a conversation of the two friends discussing the trip.

Assignment 2: Les Apps de Voyage.

Paris Travel Apps for your iPhone and iPad
Guidebooks too heavy? Download helpful iPhone and iPad apps
that will help you get the most out of Paris.

Choisissez deux apps les plus pratiques pour vous que vous probablement achetez pour votre visite à Paris.

external image mzi.majjmkvl.pngMetro Paris Subway
Subway map apps beat the printed Metro map because they clarify overlapping points,
lines and other ambiguities in a way that a compressed printed map can't.

external image mzi.xfuqxqgt.png**Paris Map Offline**
A Paris map app that you don't need a Wi-Fi connection to use,
but that still has location tracking when you ARE connected to WiFi.

external image mzi.ihysovny.png**Rick Steves' Louvre Tour**
I love Rick Steves' museum guides. He takes seemingly overwhelming
art collections and breaks them down into bite size chunks, and then
he neatly places the artworks into a historical context that the average,
non-scholarly tourist can understand.

external image mzi.utkgcjgy.png**Rick Steves' Historic Paris Walk**
This 30-minute walk covers the oldest partsof Paris -- Ile de la Cite
and the historic sections of the 6th arrondissement (the Latin Quarter, etc.)
-- through text, audio, and video. I did this walk with one of my best friends
the very first time I went to Paris, but with the physical guidebook.

external image mzi.wrjaoppg.png**Versailles Guide**
If you decide not to take one of the official tours of the Palace of Versailles,
you could use this app instead. Even if you do take the palace tour,
Steves' app includes information about the Versailles gardens and
grounds that you wouldn't get on the palace tour.

external image icon.png**France Michelin Guide App**
Find great places to eat in Paris while you're on the go.

external image mzi.nlnirinf.png**French / English Translation Dictionary by Ultralingua**
Is your high school French a little rusty? With this app,
you'll have the French words you need (and the English translations)
at your fingertips.

Assignment 3: Transportation - time to expand your vocabulary. Make a 6 slide presentation on some new and fun modes of transportation. Think of the current things people use to get around and learn how to say them in French. For instance, how do you say hybrid, long board, or electric car?

Assignment 4: Find a book from the reading section and spend 20 minutes reading. See if you can learn some new words or phrases to use in class.

FutureAssignment 5: My life in 20 years. Describe the details of what your life will be like in the future. Where will you live? What job will you have? What will your family be like? What kind of a car will you drive? What will you do for fun? What kind of music will you listen to? What will your kids do? What will the world be like? What will we still have or do the same or differently? Who will be president?

Try and be as creative as you can. Use the future when writing.

Assignment 6: Find a book from the reading section and spend 20 minutes reading. See if you can learn some new words or phrases to use in class.

Assignment 7: What if? Create a list of five what if scenarios in French. Then write out the scenarios and the results. For instance, what if we lived under water. If we lived under water we would swim better, hold our breathe longer, but we would still need to eat. I would probably get sick of eating seafood. Write a short paragraph for each of the scenarios.

Assignment 8: The president and the government of France is different from ours, but the same too. Do some research and create a short presentation on some of the following questions. You can list other interesting facts you found as well. I have websites available to get you started, but feel free to find other sources. Please cite your sources in the presentation.

  • Who is the current President?
  • Who were the last six Presidents?
  • How long is the term of President?
  • When is the President elected? By what process is he/she elected?
  • Where does the President work?
  • What form of government does France have?
  • Who is a prime minister and why does France have one?
  • What are the branches of legislature in France?
  • What is a republic and which republic is France currently in?
  1. Politics of France
  2. History of France
  3. Overview of France

Assignment 9: Watch 20-30 minutes of a Disney or other movie with French Audio and English sub-titles. Write down 20 new words that you learned. Turn in a paper with the name of the film and the list of words with translations.

Assignment 10: UNIT EXAM REVIEW - Complete the review packet prior to taking the Unit 5 Exam. It is also a good idea to review all of the vocabulary and your notes. pdf Here is the French 3 Unit 5 study guide to download.
